There is a unique magic in being a celebrant. Unlike traditional services, I am not tied down by prescribed scripts or rigid regulations—unless, of course, you want them. It is a role that grants me a front-row seat to the most profound moments of the human experience. Whether I am standing on the wind-scoured peaks of the Cumbrian Fells, in a tranquil Lakeland spa hotel, or amidst the sophisticated elegance of Mayfair, my mission remains the same: to tell your story, your way.

At Special Moments Celebrant, I have the immense pleasure of meeting couples and families from across the UK and far beyond. From the bustling energy of Doha and the sun-drenched coasts of Turkey to the rustic charm of the Cotswolds and the vast plains of the USA, love knows no borders. Every journey — or the graveside—is paved with a narrative that deserves to be heard.

The “Diving Buddy” Philosophy of Marriage

I recently heard a story that perfectly encapsulates the essence of a lifelong partnership. It came from a deep-sea diver describing the role of a “Diving Buddy.” When you are deep underwater, navigating the unknown, your buddy is the one who constantly monitors your tank, watches your back, and ensures your safety. Because they are there, you don’t have to worry; you can simply experience the awe of the ocean.

Marriage is exactly like that. It is the ultimate “buddy system.” It’s the comfort of knowing that, through every high tide and low current of life, someone is looking out for you. My job is to take that feeling of security and devotion and weave it into a ceremony that feels as deep and vast as the ocean itself.

One of the greatest joys of choosing a celebrant-led wedding is the freedom to break away from “how things are usually done.” We aren’t just planning a wedding; we are creating a magical ceremony that encompasses every one of your dreams, no matter how unconventional they may seem.

Adding a Touch of Whimsy

Who says flower girls have to be toddlers? I’ve seen the pure joy on guests’ faces when two grandmothers take on the role of flower girls, throwing confetti with more enthusiasm than any three-year-old ever could.

I’ve also seen grandfathers acting as “page boys,” perhaps not carrying rings, but handing out bottles of water to guests on a hot summer’s day. These moments of fun and intergenerational love are what make a wedding truly unforgettable.

Personal Touches that Pop

From writing bespoke vows that make everyone reach for the tissues to unique “honour guards,” the possibilities are endless. I once officiated a ceremony where the couple’s passion for literature was celebrated with an honour guard of guests holding their favourite books aloft. Whether it’s a line of helmets, a flurry of party poppers, or a sea of colourful hankies, we create a literal “line of stories” for the newlyweds to walk through.

Honouring a Life: The Flip Side of the Coin

While many of my days are spent in the glow of new beginnings. I also spend a significant amount of time with those navigating the quiet halls of grief. Being a funeral celebrant is a profound honour. It is about spending time with those who have lost a loved one and listening—really listening—to the stories of the friends and family we see no more.

A Toast to a Life Well-Lived

A funeral should be as unique as the person it honours. There is a beautiful, raw honesty in finding that “perfect” tribute that captures the twinkle in their eye or the funny story that would cause a belly laugh. Each ceremony must be bespoke. Sometimes, that means:

• The Perfect Reading. Finding the exact poem, story, or prose that captures their unique spirit.

• A Final “Cheers”.  Placing a favourite pint of ale on top of the coffin as a final tribute to a life enjoyed.

• Musical Legacies .Transitioning from a sombre classical piece to a roaring rock anthem that defined their youth.

• Physical Tributes. Releasing balloons at a burial or lighting a single candle to represent the light they brought into the wor ld.

Whether we are celebrating a life just starting. Orone that has reached its sunset, it is always about the individual.
