A registrar handles the legal side of a wedding. A vicar or minister leads a service within their faith tradition. Both have their place, and I’ve got nothing but respect for what they do.

But a celebrant? That’s something different altogether.

As an independent celebrant, I don’t have a script I must follow. There’s no tradition I’m bound to honour, no institution I answer to. I answer only to you—and to the person or people at the heart of the ceremony.

What that means in practice is that your ceremony can be anything. Traditional or modern. Spiritual or secular. Formal or relaxed. Funny or deeply moving. Or honestly? All of those things at once — because real life rarely fits into a single neat category, does it?

The other Saturday, we popped over to Cockermouth, just a stone’s throw from home. As ever, my trusty Leica was by my side. Though it is early spring, the wind carried a lingering chill, a reminder that winter isn’t quite ready to let go. Yet, in that crisp air, there was a sense of quiet reflection.
