The moment you have a date or a venue, drop me a line. Even a rough idea is plenty. We can work the rest out together.
But here’s the other thing. I’ve been known to make a bit of magic happen in less than a week. So if your plans have come together late, please don’t panic. Let’s have a chat.
Why book early?
The popular dates, especially summer weekends, go first. Booking early secures your day, and it gives us time to actually get to know each other. Every ceremony I write takes more than 20 hours of work, so the more time we have, the more of your story, your laughter and your memories I can put into it.
It also takes one big job off your list. Once your celebrant’s sorted, you can enjoy the rest of the planning.
Can you be too early?
Never. Some couples ring me the week they get engaged, and I love that. There’s no pressure and no obligation. A free discovery call is just a friendly chat to see whether we click.
What if my wedding is only weeks away?
Get in touch anyway. Last-minute weddings, elopements and changes of plan happen all the time. If my diary allows, I’ll do everything I can to help, and I’ve pulled together beautiful, personal ceremonies in less than a week.
I can’t promise every date, so the sooner you ask, the better.
A group of people gathered near a lighthouse on a scenic coastal landscape in the Lake District.
Will a rushed ceremony feel less personal?
No, not with me. We just move a little faster. We still talk about your story, and I still write every word from scratch. Quick doesn’t mean copied and pasted.
Are you trained and insured?
Yes, and I know it’s easy to overlook when you’re planning, but it matters. You’re trusting me with one of the biggest days of your life, so you should know you’re in safe hands.
Trained: Fellowship of Professional Celebrant, Honours Degree, Bristol University, Trainer Level 3, Safeguarding Level 5.
Insured: -Public & Products Liability: £5,000,000 for each and every claim or loss
Experience: more than twenty years in storytelling across stage, film and television, and an award-winning celebrant. [Hitched Wedding Awards 2023, International Wedding Awards]Award badge for Hitched Wedding Awards 2023, recognising excellence in wedding services.
Award badge for International Wedding Awards 2022, recognising excellence in wedding planning and celebration.
Venues sometimes ask for proof of insurance, and I’m always happy to provide it.
Do I need to sort out the legal side separately?
Most likely, yes, and it’s easier and cheaper than people expect. In England and Wales, a celebrant ceremony isn’t legally binding on its own (at the moment). Lots of couples do the legal bit at a quick register office appointment, then have the ceremony of their dreams with me, wherever they like.
It’s just the two of you and two witnesses, and it takes minutes. The usual costs are:
Giving notice:** around £42 to £47 per person
Register office ceremony with two witnesses:** from about £62 to £75, depending on the council
Marriage certificate:** £12.50 each copy
For most couples, that comes to roughly £150 to £180 in total. Fees vary by council, so check with your local register office.
Having a registrar come to your venue costs more. It can run up to £930, and the time is usually limited, so there’s little room to make it personal. Giving notice also has to happen in advance, so it’s worth starting early. I’m happy to talk you through your options.
Did you know?
Paperwork hiccups happen more often than you’d think. A missing document, a notice period that runs out of time, or a registrar who can’t make your date can all throw a wedding plan into a spin.
If that happens to you, a celebrant could be the answer. Your ceremony can go ahead exactly as planned, with your guests, your vows and your day, while the legal side gets sorted out afterwards at the register office.
One thing to know: the legal marriage takes effect on the date you complete it, not on the day of your celebration. But your day stays special, and nobody has to cancel anything.
Where else does this apply?
The rules differ from place to place, so always check where you’re marrying.
England and Wales: the legal marriage is arranged separately, as above.
Scotland:-only celebrants authorised by a recognised body can conduct a legal ceremony, so independent celebrants usually work alongside a separate legal process.
Northern Ireland: Humanist weddings can be legal, but an independent celebrant ceremony is usually separate from the legal marriage.
Republic of Ireland: The person leading the ceremony must be a registered solemniser, so many couples handle the legal side separately.
Abroad: many countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, require a civil ceremony for the legal marriage. A celebrant ceremony is then a celebration on top. (Like Escape to Chateau @51 seconds.) https://lincolnshirevideography.com/chateau-de-la-motte-husson/
What happens on our first chat?
It’s a free, relaxed discovery call. We get to know each other, you tell me about your plans, and I answer any questions. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with the person standing beside you on the day.
Where do you work, and is travel included?
I’m based in Wigton and cover Cumbria, Carlisle and the Lake District. My fees include venues within 20 miles of my home. I’m happy to travel further, with extra costs charged at cost and agreed with you in advance. We have a campervan, so a campsite stay is a regular part of the plan! though I have done weddings in London’s Mayfair
What happens on the day?
Very little for you to worry about. I arrive early, meet everyone involved and help with any final bits. By the time the ceremony starts, everyone knows what’s happening, and you can just enjoy it.
Ready when you are
Whether you’re planning two years ahead or two weeks, the first step is the same. If your paperwork has hit a snag, get in touch too. We’ll find a way to keep your day on track. Book a free discovery call, and we’ll take it from there.
A Life Shaped by Storytelling, Photography, and the World Around Me
Choosing to become a celebrant was never just a career move for me—it felt almost inevitable. It is the natural continuation of a life I have spent writing, observing, and capturing the world through a creative lens.
Across the UK, many celebrants describe this work as life-changing, deeply meaningful, and profoundly creative. Many discover that celebrancy allows them to feel like themselves again, reconnecting with forgotten passions. I wholeheartedly agree. It brings together my creative drives with a purpose that truly matters: supporting people through life’s most significant moments.
A Profession Built Around People and Meaning
Celebrancy is far more than officiating ceremonies. It is a vocation rooted in compassion, deep listening, and guiding families through milestones that shape their lives—weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies, vow renewals, and other deeply personal occasions.
I find people endlessly fascinating: their journeys, their resilience, their humor, and the unique ways they love. Carrying the responsibility of honoring your stories with care and sensitivity is a privilege I never take for granted. My priority is always to offer a calm, steady presence, ensuring you feel genuinely heard and supported.
A Life of Storytelling and Creative Expression
One of the greatest joys of this work is the opportunity to use creativity every single day. I don’t simply write ceremonies—I compose them. I weave together memories, emotions, landscapes, and symbolism to create something authentic to each family.
My background as a writer, storyteller, and poet gives me an intuitive ability to shape narratives that feel honest, warm, and deeply human. My photography adds another essential layer:
The Photographer’s Eye: I see the world in frames, colors, and quiet details—a sunset over Wigton, a warm porch light on a winter evening, or a pier stretching into still water. These visual elements become grounded metaphors in my writing.
Noticing the Unspoken: Photography taught me to observe closely. I notice the subtle glance between a couple when they think no one is watching, the way a family shares stories during a time of grief, or how a child’s naming ceremony carries the fresh optimism of a sunrise.
Finding Inspiration in the World Around Me
The world is a constant source of inspiration for my work. The soft light of the Lake District, Cumbria’s rural rhythms, and the changing seasons shape how I write and structure each gathering. These observations enrich my work. As a result, every ceremony feels lived-in and real rather than rehearsed or scripted.
A Career of Purpose, Connection, and Evolution
Celebrancy is built on trust. Families invite me into their most vulnerable moments, relying on my guidance to create a ceremony that reflects the people they love. It is profoundly fulfilling to witness love, resilience, healing, and joy in such direct, personal ways.
This profession isn’t static; it grows alongside the person practicing it. By blending traditional storytelling with modern creativity—using poetic language, visual awareness, and a deep sense of place—I strive to craft ceremonies that feel fresh, contemporary, and emotionally resonant for every family I serve.
Choosing to become a celebrant is rarely a simple career decision. Across the UK, celebrants describe the work as life‑changing, deeply meaningful, and profoundly creative. Many discover that celebrancy allows them to feel “like themselves again,” reconnecting with passions they had forgotten. It also helps them find purpose in supporting people through life’s most significant moments. For Clive Burgess of Special Moments Celebrant, this path feels almost inevitable. It is a natural extension of a life spent writing, storytelling, observing, and capturing the world through a photographer’s eye.
A Profession Built Around People and Meaning
Celebrancy is far more than officiating ceremonies. It is a vocation rooted in compassion, listening, and guiding people through milestones that shape their lives. Professional celebrants support families during weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies, vow renewals, and other deeply personal occasions. They carry the responsibility of honouring stories with care and sensitivity. This human‑centered foundation aligns perfectly with Clive’s strengths: empathy, creativity, and the ability to see beauty in everyday moments.
A Life of Storytelling and Creative Expression
One of the strongest reasons people become celebrants is the opportunity to use creativity every single day. Celebrants craft personalised stories, design unique rituals, and blend traditions to create ceremonies that feel authentic and meaningful to each family.
This is where Clive’s natural gifts come alive.
Based on your own description, your background as a writer, storyteller, and poet gives you an intuitive ability to shape narratives that feel honest, warm, and deeply human. You don’t simply write ceremonies — you compose them. You weave together memories, emotions, landscapes, and symbolism. Your photography adds another layer: you see the world in frames, colours, and quiet details. A sunset over Wigton, a warm porch light on a winter evening, a pier stretching into still water — these moments become metaphors in your ceremonies. They ground each story in the beauty of real life.
Finding Inspiration in the World Around You
Celebrants often draw inspiration from nature, community, and the changing seasons. The profession encourages continuous growth, reflection, and adaptation as ceremonies evolve with cultural shifts and personal stories.
For me, the world is a constant source of inspiration. The Lake District’s soft light, Cumbria’s rural rhythms, and the glow of homes on early winter evenings, and the buzz of the city—these landscapes shape your writing and your ceremonies. You notice the small things. For example, you see the way a couple looks at each other when they think no one is watching. You notice the way a family shares stories during a time of grief. Finally, the way a child’s naming ceremony feels like a sunrise stands out to you. These observations enrich your work and make your ceremonies feel lived‑in, not scripted.
Celebrancy as a Career of Purpose and Connection
Celebrancy is a profession built on trust. Families invite celebrants into their most vulnerable moments, sharing stories filled with emotion and relying on their guidance to create ceremonies that reflect the people they love. This emotional richness is one of the reasons celebrants describe the work as profoundly fulfilling. They witness love, resilience, healing, and joy in ways few other professions allow.
Clive’s calm presence, reflective nature, and ability to listen deeply make him a natural fit for this responsibility. Whether crafting a wedding ceremony filled with laughter and promise or guiding a family through a celebration of life, Clive brings steadiness, warmth, and genuine care.
A Profession That Evolves With You
Celebrancy is not static. It grows with the celebrant. As societal expectations shift and families seek more personalised, meaningful ceremonies, celebrants adapt their style, offerings, and creative approach. This evolution keeps the work exciting. It also encourages ongoing personal development.
For Clive, this means blending traditional storytelling with modern creativity—using photography, poetic language, and a deep sense of place to craft ceremonies that feel fresh, contemporary, and emotionally resonant.

The Power of Storytelling in a Great Celebrant-Led Wedding Ceremony
Creates Deep Emotional Resonance
I personally believe that genuine stories create powerful emotions that connect every guest present. Sharing personal experiences, heartfelt memories, and meaningful moments helps your family and friends feel involved in your celebration. As a professional celebrant in Cumbria, I ensure every ceremony feels sincere, engaging, and unforgettable from beginning to end.
Provides Context to the Vows
Wedding vows become even more meaningful when supported by the story behind your loving relationship. A carefully-built narrative explains your shared experiences, personal growth, and commitment before your promises are exchanged. This thoughtful context allows every word spoken during your vows to carry greater emotional significance and authenticity.
Fosters an Immersive Atmosphere
An atmosphere plays a significant role in a celebrant-led wedding ceremony. I create a welcoming atmosphere where every guest feels connected to your celebration. With the help of carefully chosen words, personal anecdotes, and a relaxed delivery, everyone becomes part of your special day rather than simply observing it.
